It's almost therapeutic to me. And when our Director of Communications came up to me after practice to let me know I would have the chance to cook in the White House kitchen with Chef Sam Kass, I was ecstatic.<BR> <BR>When choosing the recipe I would make on my visit to the White House, I wanted to come up with something that s simple for anyone to make and features Gulf seafood. There was no better place to look than the cookbook <A HREF="http://www.dreambignola.com/" TARGET="_BLANK">my foundation</A> created as a fundraiser a couple years ago. I already had the recipe in mind when I chose the honey bourbon glazed shrimp and andouille sausage skewers. The recipe was given to us by the legendary New Orleans restaurant Commander's Palace. We figured this recipe would be a great way to feature some of the amazing seafood that comes from the Gulf shores.<BR> <BR>Spending time in the White House kitchen and meeting Sam was really cool for all of us. I've met some famous chefs in New Orleans; they are treasures of our city. To us, food is art. Emeril and John Besh, our artists. So meeting Sam Kass was kind of like meeting Picasso. The best part was that we were cooking something that s already so good, it's hard to mess up. Our shrimp, from near Houma, Louisiana, speak for themselves. So when Sam took his first bite and said, "Those are the best shrimp I've ever had," it didn't come as much of a surprise to me. I said the exact same thing the first time I had Gulf shrimp.<BR> <BR>Seafood isn't just food in Louisiana; it's also a way of life for many. That s why it s important for us now to let people across the nation know that seafood from open Gulf waters is safe to eat and certainly delicious. As a part of the New Orleans community, we, the New Orleans Saints, have to keep helping our family. So, the next time you re at a restaurant, or at the store, remember that you aren't just buying Gulf shrimp, you're supporting your fellow Americans. It also doesn't hurt they may be the best shrimp you've ever eaten, just ask Sam.<BR> <BR><i>Zach Strief is offensive tackle for the New Orleans Saints and founder of the <a href="http://www.dreambignola.com/" target="_blank">Dream Big Foundation</a>.</i><BR> <BR>Learn more about Gulf seafood <a href="http://www.whitehouse.gov/gulfseafood" target="_blank">here</a> and make Zach s Gulf Shrimp and Andouille Skewers at home:<BR> <BR><ul style="text-align:left;"><B>Ingredients:</B><BR> <BR><style type="text/css">li {margin-top: 10px; }</style> <li>1/4 cup Creole mustard or other whole grain mustard</li> <li>1/4 cup honey</li> <li>2 tablespoons bourbon</li> <li>1 teaspoon chipotle Tabasco sauce</li> <li>1 pound large gulf shrimp peeled, deveined and tails left on</li> <li>12 ounces andouille or other hot sausage cut to the same thickness as the shrimp</li> <li>8 6-inch bamboo skewers (soaked in water for 30 minutes)</li> <li>2 tablespoons + 1/2 teaspoon vegetable oil</li> <li>1 teaspoon Creole seasoning Prepare the spicy bourbon mustard</li><BR> <BR></ul><u>Directions:</u><BR> <BR>Combine all the ingredients in a medium bowl. The mustard will keep in an airtight container chilled for a week. Prepare a medium high fire on a grill or grill pan. Alternately thread the shrimp and sausage on the skewers. Rub both sides with oil and season with Creole seasoning. Place the skewers on the grill and cook for 2 minutes each side until shrimp are pink and cooked through, and sausages are browned and cooked through. Baste the skewers with the spicy bourbon mustard during the last 30 seconds of cooking. Serve immediately, passing additional spicy mustard on the side. All five members of Commissioners Court contacted her Friday morning to pledge their support in helping her with the resources needed to stage a successful election in which early voting begins in just 52 days, she said. <BR><BR> Kaufman encouraged people to vote early in person or by mail. <BR><BR> "There is no doubt in my mind that we re going to have a timely election here and that we re going to take care of the voters," Kaufman said. <BR><BR> Houston Fire Department spokesman Patrick Trahan said arson investigators were at the scene of the fire, but no cause has been determined. <BR><BR> The three-alarm blaze started about 4:15 a.m. at the football field-size warehouse the county uses to store its election equipment. Firefighters extinguished the flames about four hours later. <BR><BR> No injuries were reported. <BR><BR> The county s voting machines, including eSlate equipment, were stored at the nearly 27,000-square foot facility, county officials said. <BR><BR> Early voting begins Oct. 18. For the first time in any of our lives we have found ourselves in a Constitutional crisis. Since the beginning of our great Country there have been many attempts made at amending the Constitution. The framers of our founding document realized that, for its meaning to stay intact, there could never be changes made to it. It was made clear by the language in it, that there were to be no amendments made to the Constitution of the United States of America. To do so would erode its guarantees that we as a people would remain free and self determining, that regardless of social status, no one person could impose his will on another person in relation to that person's inalienable rights for the pursuit of happiness. As long as that person obeyed the laws of society, he was guaranteed certain inalienable rights. The framers knew that to change one part of it, would affect its structure as a whole. Like a Spider Web, to cut one strand would compromise the integrity of the web as a whole.</P> <P STYLE="margin-top: 20px;"> Now, as a political party, we are facing a similar crisis. The conservative ideal, the principals that unite us as a whole, are having our connecting fiber cut along the lines of ideological divides. We have extreme right wing Republicans favoring their one size fits all approach, no room for deviance from the party line, battling moderate Republicans (Rino's) who are willing to sell their soul for power and money, and who are willing to cut a deal with the Devil. Who are in turn in conflict with Independent and just barely right of center independents or centrists depending where you draw the line on being a conservative, who want an end to the business as usual. I am not saying we don t all want an end to business as usual, all I know is neither party has helped get us out of this mess. It is almost like they are joined at the hip. There are far too many deals being cut that leave us tax payers holding the bill. There is too much Pork on both sides of the isle and it seems no one is truly looking out for us, the tax payer.
